The Marcialonga of the Val di Fiemme
The Marcialonga is a renowned cross-country skiing competition which is held every year in the Val di Fiemme and the Val di Fassa. The starting point is Moena, the first town of the Val di Fassa. From here the trail leads to Canazei, then down along the left side of the river Avisio to Molina di Fiemme. The final climb leads into the central square of Cavalese, after 70 kilometers of trail.
The first edition dates back to 1971 and for the first six years the competition was open only to men. Since the 1978 edition women may also participate. Due to the low snowfall in the years 1975, 1989 and 1990 the competition didn't take place. As a tribute to the founders of Marcialonga the Autonomous Province of Trento granted them the Seal of St. Wenceslas in 2003.
The Marcialonga is a really important event not just for the Val di Fiemme but also for Trentino and attracts athletes from all over the world. Definitely an event not to be missed for those who decide to spend their winter holidays in these beautiful mountains.
